It’s sometimes funny the way we assume digestive issues to be normal things in our day to day activities.
Occasionally, every person experiences certain digestive issues sometimes common to them.
Our diet goes a long way in affecting our general health. Digestion is one important process that should not be taken lightly.
Occasionally, digestive symptoms may come with different signs and symptoms such as heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, belching, and gas.
Here are 4 ways to improve your digestion naturally
Mindful Eating
One major reason we consume a lot is that we don’t eat mindfully. You will be surprised you can finish a bigger bowl of food than you eat normally when your mind isn’t there. Take for instance, do you notice how fast you consume not minding how full you are when watching a movie, chatting, or doing other things.
To do this as you put away your phone when eating, turn off your TV, pay attention to the texture of the food, its temperature, and taste.
Mindful eating is the process of paying attention to all aspects of food and the process involved in consumption.
You will be surprised you have in one way or another prevented heartburn or even an upset stomach knowing fully well that you did not eat beyond what you need.
“Why are you running” Yah! Enjoy the food just like the way you eat fried meat π.
If by chance you have eating beans and maize (Ewa Alagbado), I’m certain you will know the importance of chewing well.
Stay hydrated
One major reason constipation occurs is because of low fluid intake.
Drinking water will go a long way to help meet your digestive needs. It is recommended that you drink (1.5β2 liters) of non-caffeinated fluids per day to prevent constipation.
You can also include fruits and vegetables that are high in water such as melons, waterleaf, cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, and peaches in your meal. They can help meet your fluid intake needs.
In staying hydrated, it doesn’t mean that you drink large amounts of water while eating. Sipping on some water to help food movement is okay. Drinking large amounts of Juice while eating can cause constipation and heartburn.
Chew your food well
Digestion starts from the mouth. Your teeth helps break down your food to make it easier for your digestive enzymes.
The longer you chew the more saliva is made. Chewing your food thoroughly ensures that you have sufficient saliva as this will even prevent symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion.
Also, the act of chewing has been shown to reduce stress. So chew that food well and reduce the load of your digestive enzymes.
Consume plenty of fiber
Fibers are important as they help in bowel movement.
Three common fiber types include soluble and insoluble fiber as well as prebiotics.
Soluble fibers like legumes and nuts help in water absorption as well as the addition of bulk to stool. Insoluble fibers which include wheat brans, vegetables, and whole grains helps in tract movement as if they wash your tract.
Prebiotics on the other hand helps induce the growth or activity of beneficial micro-organisms in your body. They feed your healthy gut bacteria mostly found in your gastrointestinal tract.
Your posture when eating, healthy fats, stress, and bad habits also affects your digestive system. Bad habits include late-night eating, gluttony, smoking, and excessive drinking of alcohol.
You never can tell. A healthy lifestyle will go a long way to affect your general health. Stay safe and eat well.
